Buying a car is a huge decision, and when you add the extra complexity of buying a used car, it’s important to do your homework.
Here’s a list of factors to consider to make sure you’re getting the right car for your needs, as well as a good deal.
- It's important to know what you're looking for in a car. What are your needs, wants and budget? Determine what sort of travelling you do. Do you need a small car, medium car, large car for people moving or maybe a 4WD. Consider common makes of car or ones that are well known, as they could be more beneficial due to ease of servicing and repairs should anything go wrong down the track.
- Decide if you would prefer buying from a dealer as opposed to privately, remember that buying privately provides no warranty or avenue for help if something should go wrong as the Australian Consumer Law does not cover private sales.
- If buying privately, do a PPSR (www.ppsr.gov.au) check to see if the car has finance owing, has been written off, or is stolen – this can save you lots of time and money down the track!
- If you buy a car from a licensed dealer, you are more protected than buying from a private seller. If a car is less than 10 years old and has less than 160,000km on the clock, it is covered by a mandatory three-month or 5,000km statutory warranty.
- If buying from a dealer, ask for the service history—was the car previously owned privately or belonged to an organization (like a business)? Was it used as part of their fleet? This information can help you determine whether the vehicle has been properly maintained over its lifetime so far or not.
- If you are looking at a 4wd or a larger vehicle, is it fitted with a towbar? Chances are it may have done some towing work in its lifetime, sometimes extensive. This could mean issues might arise in the future. It’s best to have a good understanding of the towing history, so you don’t have any nasty surprises.
- Take the car for a reasonable test drive to check its performance for yourself.
- Consider having the vehicle inspected by an AANT Approved Repairer who undertakes pre-purchase inspections and will be able to provide a comprehensive report of the vehicle’s condition.
Buying a used car can be a great way to save money, but it’s important to be careful. Do your research and be sure to ask lots of questions. If you’re not sure about something, don’t be afraid to walk away. Buying a car is a big investment, so it’s important to make sure you’re making the right decision.
