Blooms for Blokes

The first time most blokes receive flowers is at their funeral.

AANT is championing road safety with a powerful initiative to address the disproportionate number of men killed on the Northern Territory roads.

Over the past decade, 283 men have lost their lives on Northern Territory roads—nearly two and a half times the number of women. Research shows Territorians are three times more likely to be killed in a road crash than in any other region in Australia.

The campaign, inspired by RACQ’s impactful Blooms for Blokes initiative, encourages Territorians to reach out to the men in their lives with a simple yet powerful message: show the important men in your life how much they matter. Blooms for Blokes highlights the harsh reality that, too often, the first-time men receive flowers is at their funeral.

The Blooms for Blokes campaign calls for Territorians to give a flower to the men they love and care about. The gesture serves as a catalyst for crucial conversations about road safety, allowing people to express how much they value their loved ones’ lives. This simple act is also an opportunity to break through the “tough guy” mentality that often prevents men from discussing their safety, especially when it comes to driving.

Simon Matthias, CEO of AANT and a local advocate for the campaign, says:

“A lot of men don’t take the time to talk about their safety, especially when it comes to driving. There’s this ‘it won’t happen to me’ mentality, but the reality is, it’s more likely to happen to you. If we want to keep our mates, dads, sons and brothers safe, we need to have that conversation. Give a flower. Have the conversation. It matters. You matter.”

The Blooms for Blokes campaign will be actively engaging with the community in the Darwin Mall on December 3rd between 11.30am -12.30pm and Coolalinga Central Shopping Centre on December 7th between 11.00am -12.00pm. These events will feature flower handouts and opportunities for the public to participate in meaningful conversations about road safety.

The goal is to reduce the number of road fatalities in the region and ensure that the important men in our lives return home safely each day.

By joining the campaign and starting these essential conversations, we can all make a difference in improving road safety in our community. Send a virtual flower through our Blooms for Blokes dedicated landing page to your loved ones today and spread the road safety message.

Give a flower. Start the conversation. Save a life.
