Improving Safety around road works

A partnership with the Northern Territory Government

To help make our roads safer, the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics is developing a series of education modules and materials to ensure road users and workers are safe around road works.

They have teamed up with local business Ambrose Solutions and industry expert Dr Dan Sullivan to create two animated safety modules entitled ‘how to drive safely through a road work site’ and ‘how to be safe whilst working on the road’.

The initiative follows risk assessment research conducted by the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland, Austroads, Traffic Management Association of Australia and other industry bodies.

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics General Manager of Transport and Civil Services, Louise McCormick, said a key element of the modules is the focus on mutual responsibilities and respect, recognising that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

“The aim is that by remembering and applying the lessons in these modules, drivers and road workers will be able to minimise the risks of crashes and incidents,” she said.

“More-over, the educational materials aim to create an environment where both groups respect each other and the hazards they both experience around road works.”

The safety modules will be launched in late 2020, and will be available on towardszero website and through Ambrose Solutions’ DriveAbout app.
